Just like how hoomans need to brush their teeth after meals, doggos need it too! After all, they also need to keep their mouths clean and free from plaque and bad breath.
Even so, doing it for the first time isn’t something your furry pals can get used to easily. It’s something that needs to be done slowly and with a bit of skill. If you’re just starting out with cleaning your pupper’s teeth, then here are 3 tips to help you get started.
1. Timing and location matter
Doggos have feelings too, so it’s best to brush their teeth when they’re feeling relaxed and calm. Times when it’s just you and your pet can work for starters. Just remember that every dog has their moment when they feel most relaxed. That way, they’ll be less likely to run away or be anxious.
When you do start brushing, choose a well-lighted area so you can see what you’re doing. That way, you’ll see clearly which parts of the dog’s mouth need the most brushing. It’s always best to leave the mouth squeaky clean!
2. Use the right tools for the job
Toothbrushes and toothpaste made specifically for dogs are always a must. Depending on the size of your dog, different sizes of brushes may be needed. Finger brushes, multi-head or even angled ones are all available for you to use.
Dog-specific toothpaste is also a must since normal ones for hoomans can contain ingredients that can give your pupper an upset tummy. There are fun and interesting flavors like bacon, beef, and chicken liver. So go ahead and grab a flavor that your dog loves so much that he’ll let you touch his front teeth any time, any day.
As a bonus, you can also bring in his favorite toys and turn the chore into a fun bonding time with you. Reward him with his toy each time he lets you brush his teeth.
3. Take it slow and praise your pupper!
Toothbrushing is something for hoomans, which is why doggos need time to be introduced to it and get used to how the brush moves in their mouth.
First, you need to know how willing your pupper is with you touching their mouths. Start slow by touching their gums and teeth with your fingers so they get used to having something inside their mouth. Don’t forget to keep an eye out of they get anxious. If they do, stop for a bit and try again next time. You can also let them sniff the toothpaste before using it so you can make sure they’ll accept it or not. Just be sure it’s a flavor they’ll love.
When your pupper starts letting you brush their teeth, start in small circular motions. Be gentle on the gums, and be sure to aim for the canines and back teeth where plaque builds up. Once it’s done, praise your patient pet and thank them for a job well done.
You can also give them tasty treats for being such good doggos. It’s even better if they’re all-natural treats made in New Zealand like Awesome Pawsome, inspired by tasty flavors that we humans love. Let your dog try Baconmania – loaded with real cheese and bacon flavor goodness that your #1 pal will go crazy for.
